Can Spanish citizens apply for an eTA in Canada?

Yes, Spanish residents are required to apply for a Canada eTA visa to enter Canada for a short period (less than 90 days) for general tourist, business, transit, or medical activities.

This only applies to people flying commercially or on a charter trip. The eTA program was implemented in 2016 in response to the global surge in terrorist activities, safeguarding Canada's borders, and giving real-time data on all passengers entering Canada.

The Canada eTa program was approved in 2012, and it took four years to construct the tools needed to connect with current immigration databases and other security data to give a seamless new screening tool. It became compulsory in 2016.

Citizens of Spain and other European Union members must submit an electronic visa application before boarding an aircraft bound for Canada, including visitors who will simply be transiting through Canada on route to other foreign destinations.
