Can I travel to Canada by land with an ETA?
If you're from a visa-exempt country visiting Canada by land, you do not need an eTA. An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is required for visa-free foreign citizens traveling to or transiting through Canada.
Only travelers from countries that do not require a visa to enter Canada must get an eTA, and only if they are traveling by air.
A Canada eTA is valid for five years after approval, or until your passport expires, whichever occurs first.
You can apply for a Canada ETA online in 3 simple steps
- First, fill out the online application form with all of the necessary information and pick the processing choices.
- Second, ensure that the information you supplied is correct, then pay the application cost online.
- Third, submit all required papers online.
The Canadian government accepts most eTAs in minutes. However, processing might occasionally take longer. If you are asked to submit further papers, you may get instructions within 72 hours of your application.
