Can you work on an ETA in Canada?
No, you don’t work on an ETA for Canada. There is a very common misconception among visitors that having an eTA allows you to work in Canada. But the truth is that an eTA only allows you to travel to Canada for tourism, business, or transit. It does not allow you to be employed in Canada.
Therefore, if you intend to engage in any work or employment during your stay in Canada, even for a short period, you must apply for a separate work permit. A Canada eTA is not enough. There is a minor work exception.
There is now a limited exception where you can do certain types of short-term temporary work on a valid eTA for up to 15 or 30 days without a work permit. This is called a 15 or 30-day work permit exemption.
However, the tasks allowed under this provision are very specific and limited, such as attending business meetings, exploring job opportunities or providing regional training.
Remember, this is not a free pass to full-time or permanent employment.
