Does an eTA allow you to work in Canada?

No - an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) does not allow you to work in Canada. An eTA is not a work permit; it is a travel authorization. An eTA allows you to board a flight to Canada for tourism, transit, or permitted short-term business activities, but it does not guarantee entry. It does not grant the legal right to work or earn income from a Canadian employer.

What is a Canada eTA?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying into Canada. It is electronically connected to your passport and can be used within five years or until your passport expires, whichever happens first.

The eTA applies to visa-exempt foreign nationals who are traveling to Canada by air.

However, an eTA is only a permit to make temporary visits to Canada, not to study, work, or live permanently.

What You Can Do with a Canada eTA?

With a valid eTA, you can:

  • Travel to Canada as a tourist
  • Visit friends and family.
  • Attend business meetings, conferences, or negotiations as a business visitor, provided you do not enter the Canadian labor market or receive payment from a Canadian source.
  • Pass by a Canadian airport on your way to a different destination.

Most visitors are allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months, but the final length of stay is determined by a border services officer upon entry.

What You Cannot Do with an eTA

The eTA does not authorize you to:

  • Work for a Canadian employer or earn income in Canada
  • Do long-term work or short-term work.
  • Enroll in a full-time course (a study permit is needed).
  • Remain in Canada after an authorized period without an authorized extension.

Employment in Canada without a relevant permit is regarded as unauthorized employment and can lead to a visa cancellation, deportation, or a subsequent entry restriction.

If You Want to Work in Canada

You must apply for a Canadian work permit to be legally employed. The two main types are:

  1. Employer-Specific Work Permit — tied to a specific job and employer.
  2. Open Work Permit — allows you to work for almost any employer in Canada.

If you intend to work in Canada, an eTA alone is not sufficient; you must obtain an appropriate work permit before beginning any employment.

In Summary

An eTA is not a work visa — it is simply a travel authorization for short-term tourism, transit, or business visits. When you are planning to travel, you have to apply for a valid Canadian work permit through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

By doing this, with the right authorization, you are ensuring your rights and at the same time being on the right side of the Canadian immigration laws of immigration.
