How many countries border Canada?
Going by geographical size, Canada is the world’s second-largest country, covering nearly 10 million square kilometers. Although Canada is a very large country, it shares a land border with only one country—the United States
Canada and United States
The border between Canada and the United States is the longest undefended international boundary in the world, stretching approximately 8,891 kilometers (5,525 miles). This includes the borders between the continental US and Canada as well as the border between Alaska and Canada
- The boundary runs through every kind of scenic country, the heavily wooded areas of New Brunswick and Maine, the western Prairies of Manitoba and North Dakota, the rugged mountains of British Columbia and Washington State.
- The east border extends to the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence River, which is a strategic tourist, trade, and transport region.
- In the west it runs through mountainous country, and a large part of its course is along the 49th parallel north.
This large border has more than 100 official land crossing points which provide links between cities and communities on both sides. High traffic crossings are Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan; Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seattle, Washington
Maritime Borders
In addition to land boundary, Canada has sea boundary:
- France: While Canada shares a land border only with the United States, it also has maritime boundaries with France (via Saint Pierre and Miquelon) and Greenland (Denmark). These are oceanic boundaries, not land crossings, and are mainly important for issues related to fishing rights, maritime law, and Arctic sovereignty.
- Greenland (Denmark): Canada also shares maritime boundaries with Greenland, which is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, across the waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic. This boundary is significant for Arctic navigation and resource management
Conclusion
In short, Canada has only a single neighbour on the land border, which is the United States. Its sea borders however connect it to France and Greenland and by this the geographical affiliations of Canada with both North America and the greater Atlantic and Arctic are portrayed. These borders regardless of whether they are on land or water are very important to Canada’s trade, security and cultural links in the world.
