What do I have to declare at Canadian customs?
When entering Canada, you are required to declare certain goods and items to Canadian customs. Here are some of the common items that you may need to declare:
- Goods you are bringing into the country, such as gifts, souvenirs, and items for personal use.
- Currency or monetary instruments equal to or exceeding CAD 10,000 (or its equivalent in foreign currency).
- Firearms, including firearms that are intended for hunting or sporting purposes, as well as any type of weapon or ammunition.
- Certain food, plants, animals, and related products, including fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, and live animals.
- Prescription medications and other controlled substances.
- Goods that are intended for commercial use or resale.
- Alcohol, tobacco, and related products (quantities are subject to limitations and applicable taxes and duties).
These goods may be subject to duty and taxes. When shopping outside of Canada, use the duty and taxes estimator to figure out how much duty and taxes you'll have to pay when you return.
Depending on how long you have been outside of Canada, you may be eligible for a personal exemption, which enables you to import products of a particular value into Canada without paying ordinary duty and taxes.
If you are unsure whether or not to declare anything, always declare it. Border officers will assist you in determining your personal exemptions as well as whether or not duties and taxes are payable.
If you fail to disclose items brought into Canada, or if you provide a false or incomplete statement, the commodities may be confiscated, and you may be penalized.
You may be able to pay a fee in order to have some seized property returned to you. Fines can vary from 25% to 80% of the seized goods' worth.
