When is the best time to visit Canada for wildlife watching?
If you're visiting Canada expressly for the animals, travel between May and November. This time of year provides the finest opportunities to witness grizzly bears, polar bears, migrating birds, and more than ten different species of whales. The grizzly bear observing season begins between May and June when they emerge from hibernation. Humpback whales are pursuing herring as they travel north. In July and August, you may visit the Arctic regions to witness caribou, foxes, polar bears, and whales off the shore.
September is the ideal month to watch grizzlies at their most active, packing food for hibernation and hunting wild salmon as they go upstream to breed. Polar bears are most visible in October and November when they congregate near Churchill to feed on sea ice. Most Canadian animals will be difficult to observe throughout the winter since they either hibernate, hide from the cold, or move to warmer areas.
