If your renewal application is ultimately denied, you will be considered to have lost your status in Canada as of the date of the denial letter.

No, you do not need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada by land. The Canada eTA is only required for travelers who are flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport. If you're entering Canada by car, bus, train, or boat (including a cruise ship), you do not need an eTA.
