Do you need a passport to cruise to Canada?
All travelers must have a passport to travel to Canada. If they have to fulfill the Canada eTA requirement for cruises, most international citizens will be required to carry their passports. This is due to the fact that the eTA is electronically connected to the passport.
If a Cruise Canada eTA bearer intends to disembark in Canada, they must provide the passport associated with the travel authorization.
For a cruise in Canada, US residents do not require a visa or an eTA, and they are not required to carry a passport. If they do not have a passport, they must provide a US Passport Card or one of the following documents as evidence of citizenship:
-
Naturalization certificate or an actually verified birth certificate from their natal state/province
-
A valid government-issued picture identification, such as a driver's license (not necessary for people under the age of 16).
Regardless of these alternatives, US passengers are strongly advised to bring their passports with them on a Canadian cruise. It might be beneficial if their plan changes and they need to travel back to the US from an unexpected area.
If you are a US citizen and your cruise departs or arrives in a foreign nation, including Canada, you will always require your passport (in rare situations, a passport card may work). A passport is also required for a cruise that begins and concludes in separate U.S. ports.
Keep in mind that cruise passport requirements may vary depending on shore activities. For example, whether you're riding Alaska's White Pass and Yukon Railway or taking day visits to tiny Caribbean islands, you'll require a passport each time you cross a land or sea border into a foreign nation. Additionally, verify the entrance requirements of each specific port on your schedule, since you may need a visa as well.
